Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece with a total area of 781 sq. km. (302 sq. mi.) and a population of 35,801 (2011 census). It is a separate regional unit of the Ionian Islands region and consists a single municipality, the Municipality of Kefalonia. The capital of Kefalonia is the town of Argostoli in the South, a modern town with 10,633 (2011 census) residents. An island with a diverse landscape, full of natural “mysteries” and surprises that will surely impress its visitors. In the summer, visitors can explore more than 100 beaches around the island, visit unique historical and natural landmarks, take a drive to the highest mountain in the Ionian islands (Ainos-1628 m.) or take part in one of many local festivals and taste local products and the exquisite local wines.
