Drogarati Cave in Sami

Drogarati Cave in Sami Kefalonia

Discovered almost 300 years ago thanks to an earthquake which shook the region and created a possible entrance, Drogarati has only been open to the public since 1963. Inside, the cave walls are lined with stalactite and stalagmite formations, and speleologists have estimated the cave to be 150 million years old. Drogarati is roughly 60m deep and is a constant 18 degrees Celsius, with humidity reaching a level of 90%.

Interestingly, Drogarati is comprised of two parts, only one of which is accessible to the general public. The portion open to visitors includes the โ€œRoyal Balconyโ€, a natural โ€œbalconyโ€ of light reflecting stalactites, and the โ€œChamber of Exaltationโ€. The latter is a large, hall-like space, sometimes used to host cultural events for up to 500, and named for its impressive acoustics.
